Smoke On the Mountain Homecoming

It’s October, 1945. The war is over and America’s years of prosperity are just beginning. But there’s another kind of rite of passage at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where the Reverend Mervin Oglethorpe is giving his last service. Having been called to preach in Texas, he’s already bought a 10-gallon hat and is preparing to ride into the sunset with his wife June, who is eight months pregnant. Tomorrow morning, June’s brother Dennis will take over as the congregation’s pastor. Join the Sanders Family as they send Mervin and June off in style, with hilarious and touching stories and 25 fabulous Bluegrass Gospel favorites.

Oakland’s annual dinner theater is well known throughout the community and beyond. People who attend are warmly greeted with valet parking, a wide variety of freshly prepared salads, entrees and desserts, as well as wholesome entertainment that highlights the talents that exist within the congregation. Dinner theater originated as a place where Oakland members could fellowship in a smaller setting, and produce an evening of fun for others.  Dinner theater has evolved into much more.  It is now a highly anticipated event that shapes relationships within the congregation, and offers a way to reach out to the larger community.

This year's play is Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming. The dates will be March 2, 3, 9 and 10 at 6:00 pm, cost of the dinner buffet and play will be $22.00. The play only with dessert to follow will be March 4 at 2:00 pm, cost will be $12.00. Cost for children 9 and under will be half price.
